What goes into an embroidery price
Stitch-based charge
A rate per 1,000 stitches covers machine time and thread. Bigger, denser designs cost more.
Minimum per piece
Small designs still take hooping and handling time, so a minimum keeps them worthwhile.
Quantity breaks
Discounts at 12, 24, 48, 100 and 250 pieces reward bigger orders while setup costs are spread out.
Blanks and markup
Garments and bags are priced separately, with a markup for ordering, handling and spoilage.
Setup or digitizing fee
A one-time charge per new design. Repeat orders of the same logo usually skip it.
Profit per hour
The number to watch: what each hour at the machine earns after blanks, thread and backing.
Pricing that protects your margin
- Set a minimum embroidery charge so small left chest logos don't lose money on hooping time.
- Quote from the real stitch count of the digitized design, not a guess from the artwork.
- Charge extra for caps, bags and thick items that are slower to hoop, and for more than one placement.
- Show quantity breaks on every quote: customers often move up a tier to save per piece.
- Review your rates when thread, blanks or your hourly target change.

How do embroidery shops price their work?
Most charge for the embroidery by stitch count, often a rate per 1,000 stitches with a minimum per piece, then add the garment with a markup and a one-time setup or digitizing fee per design. Larger orders get lower per-piece rates. Rates vary widely by region and market, so use your own numbers.
What should I charge per 1,000 stitches?
There's no single right number. Many shops land somewhere around $0.75 to $1.50 per 1,000 stitches for typical orders, with a minimum of a few dollars per piece. Start from your costs and the profit per machine hour you need, which the calculator shows.
Should I charge a digitizing fee?
Many shops do, because outsourcing a new logo often costs $10–$50 or more and takes days. If you digitize in-house, the setup fee covers your time and becomes margin, and you can turn quotes around the same day.
How is machine time calculated?
Stitches divided by your machine's speed, plus about a minute per piece for hooping and changing items, split across your machine heads. Thread changes on single-needle machines add more.
How do I find a design's stitch count?
Digitize the logo to get the exact count, or estimate it from the design's size and coverage with the stitch count calculator.
