Pick the right monogram style

Every layout is digitized as satin lettering with underlay, so the letters look raised and smooth.

  • Classic

Three letters with a larger middle initial. The traditional look for towels, linens, robes and wedding gifts.

  • Equal

Three letters of the same height, read in order. Clean and modern on shirts, bags and corporate gifts.

  • Single initial

One bold letter. Great for kids' items, pet gear, caps and anywhere space is tight.

  • Circle frame

A satin ring around the letters makes the monogram look finished and keeps it centered on the item.

  • Double circle

A second, thinner ring for a crest-like look on blankets, pillows and keepsakes.

  • Two colors

Choose different letter and frame threads. Gold or silver frames on navy letters are a classic combination.

Tips

Monograms that sew beautifully

  • Use a water-soluble topping on towels and fleece so the letters sit on top of the pile instead of sinking in.
  • Pick tear-away stabilizer for towels and woven linens, and cut-away for knit polos and sweatshirts.
  • Keep side letters at least 5 mm tall; choose Classic, Block or Slab when the monogram must be small.
  • Set the fabric type before you download: knits and fleece get heavier underlay and more pull compensation.
  • Center the monogram on a towel's border band, or about 5 cm (2 in) above the hem on a pillowcase.

Questions

What order do the letters go in a monogram?

For one person the traditional order is first initial, last initial, middle initial, with the last-name initial larger in the middle. Anna Grace Brown becomes A B G. For a couple, a shared last-name initial sits in the middle with each first initial on either side. If the letters are all the same size, they usually read in order: first, middle, last.

What size should a monogram be?

About 50 to 75 mm (2 to 3 in) for towels, totes and pillows, 25 to 40 mm (1 to 1.5 in) for a shirt cuff, pocket or left chest, and 75 to 100 mm (3 to 4 in) for a blanket corner. Keep side letters at least 5 mm tall so they stay readable.

Which fonts work best for monograms?

Classic, a bold serif, gives the traditional look and stitches cleanly at most sizes. Script and Retro suit gifts and wedding linens but need more height, around 40 mm and up. Block and Varsity stay crisp at small sizes on caps, cuffs and workwear.

Can the frame be a different color from the letters?

Yes. Pick a thread for the letters and another for the frame; the file sews them as two colors so your machine stops for the change. Choose the same thread for both and it sews as one color.

Which file formats can I download?

PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3, XXX, PEC, U01 and TBF, plus a PNG preview and a color sheet. Designing and previewing your monogram is free; embroidery file downloads are included in every plan.
