Embroidery thread calculator

Find out how much top and bobbin thread a design needs, how many cones to order and what the thread costs. Start from a stitch count, or open a DST, PES or JEF file to measure every color.

Estimates. Thread length is the stitch path plus about 1.5 mm per stitch for the loop through the fabric; real use varies with fabric, tension and density.

What the calculator counts

  • Top thread

The thread on the front: the length of every stitch plus the loop that goes through the fabric.

  • Bobbin thread

Usually about a third of the top thread with balanced tension. Adjust it for your machine.

  • Per color

Open a file to see each color's stitches and thread, so you can order the right cones.

  • Safety margin

Extra for thread breaks, tails at trims and a test sew-out. 10% is a common starting point.

  • Cones and cost

Cones needed for the whole order and the thread cost per piece, for quoting.

  • Any format

Measure DST, PES, JEF, EXP, VP3, XXX, PEC, U01 and TBF files, right in your browser.

Tips

Using less thread without losing quality

  • Lighter fill density on soft fabrics saves thread and keeps the design flexible.
  • Merge near-identical colors in the digitizer: fewer cones, fewer changes.
  • Order cones per color for the whole job, plus a margin, so a dye lot change doesn't show halfway through.
  • Keep a bobbin count handy: prewound bobbins run out mid-design on dense jobs.

How much thread does embroidery use?

A rough rule is 4 to 6 meters (4.5 to 6.5 yards) of top thread per 1,000 stitches, depending on stitch length, density and fabric. A 10,000-stitch left chest logo uses about 45 to 60 meters of top thread. Open the file in the calculator for a per-color figure.

How much bobbin thread does a design use?

With balanced tension the bobbin thread shows as about the middle third of a satin column, so bobbin use is often around a third of the top thread. Satin-heavy designs use a little more, sparse fills a little less.

How many cones do I need for an order?

Multiply the thread per piece by the number of pieces, add a margin for breaks and test sew-outs, then divide by the cone length. Each color needs its own cone, so the calculator counts cones per color when you open a file.

How is the thread measured from a file?

The calculator reads the stitches in your DST, PES, JEF or other file, adds up the length of every stitch for each color and adds about 1.5 mm per stitch for the loop that goes down through the fabric. Treat it as a planning estimate.

Does the file get uploaded?

No. It's read in your browser and never leaves your device.
