What is floating in embroidery?

Hooping only the stabilizer, usually an adhesive one, and pressing or pinning the item on top instead of clamping it in the hoop.

Stabilizers and hooping

Floating, explained

Floating suits items that are hard to hoop or would mark: collars, cuffs, small pieces, leather, and thick towels or bags. Score and peel the paper on adhesive stabilizer, or use temporary spray on an ordinary backing. Because the item isn't clamped, dense designs can shift it, so a basting stitch around the design (which many machines can add) helps.
