A stabilizer that dissolves in water, used as a topping on pile fabrics and as a backing for lace and sheer fabrics.

Stabilizers and hooping

Water-soluble stabilizer (wash-away), explained

Thin films are the usual topping for towels and fleece, while heavier fibrous types support free-standing lace, which is stitched on the stabilizer alone. Rinse or dab it away after stitching, and avoid it on fabrics that can't get wet; heat-away stabilizer is the usual alternative there.
