What is thread weight (40 wt) in embroidery?

A measure of thread thickness where higher numbers mean thinner thread; 40 wt is the standard for machine embroidery.

Thread weight (40 wt), explained

Most designs are digitized for 40 wt polyester or rayon thread, so switching weights usually means changing the density too. Finer 60 wt thread helps tiny lettering, while heavier 30 wt covers faster but needs lighter density. Polyester stands up better to washing and bleach; the thread guide and thread calculator cover choosing and estimating thread.
