What is density (stitch spacing) in embroidery?

How closely stitches are packed, usually given as the distance between fill rows or satin stitches in millimeters: smaller numbers mean denser.

Density (stitch spacing), explained

Fill spacing around 0.4 mm is a common starting point for 40 wt thread. Too dense and the design gets stiff, puckers or breaks thread; too light and the fabric shows through. Embrizo defaults to about 0.4 mm, and its fabric presets space rows slightly wider on knits and stretch fabrics and wider again on leather. The density guide goes deeper.
