What is satin stitch in embroidery?

Closely spaced stitches that zigzag across a narrow shape from edge to edge, giving the smooth, shiny look of embroidered lettering.

Stitches

Satin stitch, explained

Satin typically works on columns from about 1 mm up to about 7 mm wide; wider stitches can snag and loosen in the wash, and narrower ones pile up. Embrizo uses satin for shapes up to 6.5 mm wide, turns the stitches with each shape's centerline and fills anything wider. The satin vs fill guide explains when to use each.
