What is push compensation in embroidery?

Shortening shapes slightly at right angles to the stitch direction, because stitches push the fabric out there while pulling it in along their length.

Push compensation, explained

Push and pull work together: a circle filled with horizontal stitches tends to sew narrower and taller than drawn. Digitizers offset push by pulling in the ends of satin columns and the matching edges of fills a little. It is often smaller than pull and matters most on dense designs and soft fabrics.

Without: pushes past the endsWith: ends pulled in
Push compensation, drawn as thread. Real stitches are around 0.4 mm apart.
