Winter embroidery ideas

Popular winter embroidery projects are kids' sweaters and sweatshirts, beanies and mittens, mug rugs, fleece blankets, pillows and stocking cuffs. A penguin, a mug of hot cocoa, a cardinal or a sled at 3 to 4 inches suits most of them; on knits and fleece use cut-away stabilizer and a water-soluble topping.

Tips

Before you stitch

  • On fleece and sweater knits use cut-away and a water-soluble topping so stitches don't sink into the pile.
  • Keep beanie designs under about 2 in tall so they fit the folded cuff.
  • Stitch blanket corners at full size in a large hoop, or float the fleece on sticky stabilizer.
