What is sewing field in embroidery?

The area inside a hoop that the needle can actually reach, which sets the largest design a hoop and machine can stitch in one hooping.

Sewing field, explained

A hoop's name describes its sewing field, not its frame, so a 5×7 hoop sews about 130 × 180 mm, and the machine's arm travel sets the largest field it can use. Many embroiderers keep a margin of about 5–10 mm on each side rather than filling it to the edge. Embrizo's hoop presets use the 4×4, 5×7, 6×10, 8×8 and 8×12 in fields; check a design with the hoop size calculator and split bigger ones with the design splitter.
