What is stitches per minute in embroidery?

A machine's sewing speed, often written SPM; with the stitch count, color changes and trims, it sets how long a design takes to sew.

Stitches per minute, explained

Home embroidery machines commonly top out somewhere between about 400 and 1,000 spm and commercial multi-needle heads often go higher, but many embroiderers sew below the maximum. Slowing down helps with metallic thread, caps, dense fills and small lettering. Embrizo estimates sew time at 700 stitches a minute plus time for each color change and trim, and the production calculator works out pieces per hour at your own speed.
