What is center-run underlay in embroidery?

A single line of running stitches sewn down the middle of a narrow satin column before the satin, anchoring it to the backing without adding bulk.

Center-run underlay, explained

Center runs suit narrow columns such as small lettering and fine borders, where edge runs or a zigzag would crowd the column and make it lumpy. They hold the fabric to the backing so the satin doesn't shift, and give it a little lift. Embrizo uses a center run under satin columns narrower than about 1.8 mm at its standard underlay level and edge runs above that; the heavy level switches to edge runs sooner.
