What is motif fill in embroidery?

A fill made of a small repeating pattern, such as diamonds, waves or stars, often sewn in running stitches to add texture instead of a flat surface.

Motif fill, explained

Motif and other patterned fills are often sewn light, so the fabric shows between the pattern lines, which keeps large areas soft and quicker to stitch. Small patterns get lost at small sizes or on textured fabric, so many embroiderers save them for big backgrounds. Embrizo fills with tatami rather than motif patterns, which are usually set up in desktop digitizing software; the satin vs fill guide covers the standard stitches.
